Client Specific Training:
Safe use of Power Tools: Angle Grinder Safety Training
In 2006, we were approached by Chervon, the previous owner of the Cape Town Refinery, to develop training materials to prevent on site injuries when using power tools. This training is mandatory at the Cape Town Refinery. We have successfully trained over 8000 people.
Flange Management Training
In 2014, we developed training material based on the Chevron Specification for Bolted Joint Integrity, raising awareness on how to reduce and eliminate leaking flanged joints. This training is mandatory at the Cape Town Refinery. We have successfully trained over 3300 people.
Our Experience through the years
Major Refinery Rebuild at Astron Energy (November 2021 to December 2022)
Provided training services to the Contractors at the Astron Energy Cape Town Refinery.
Mandatory Training:
- Safe use of Power Tools Angle Grinder Training – 910 people
- Flange Management – 460 people.
- Working at Heights – 912 people.
- Confined Space – 583 people
Construction Management Team consisting of Construction Managers, Supervisors, Superintendents, Engineers, Permit Receivers etc. were trained in the following courses:
- Construction Regulations
- Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment
- Legal Liability
Total Trained: 2 907 people
Training Material Development for Astron Energy South Africa (February 2022 to May 2022)
Astron Energy Cape Town Refinery had developed Quality Control Guidance Procedures for the Refinery in Milnerton. In order to roll out the requirements to applicable personnel and suppliers, Emprotrain developed training material specific to each of the following procedures:
- Rotating Equipment Installation & Maintenance
- Analyzer Installation & Maintenance
- Electrical Installation & Maintenance
- Quality Assurance Governance Framework
- Quality Assurance Audit Procedure
- Quality Assurance Manual
- Instrumentation Equipment Installation & Maintenance
- Induction of Inspectors
Each of these procedures comprised of three levels of training, namely:
- Comprehensive Training – Competency Based Training – included a Training Manual, MS PowerPoint Presentation and Competency Assessment
- Intermediate Training – MS PowerPoint Presentation and Competency Assessment
- Awareness Training – MS PowerPoint Presentation only
Skills Evaluation of Experienced Semi-Skilled Personnel for New Age Solutions (Pty) Ltd (June 2022)
As a prime contractor at Astron Energy Refinery in Cape Town, New Age Solutions (Pty) Ltd identified a number of experienced semi-skilled fitter who had the potential to be developed as artisans.
The objective was to prepare them for the Trade Test via the Artisan Recognition of Prior Learning (ARPL) route.
Phase 1 of the project which entailed Evaluation of CVs (portfolio of evidence) and Skills Evaluation was completed with 9 semi-skilled Mechanical Fitters being evaluated. A Gap Analysis Report detailed the gaps in knowledge, skills and practical abilities. Gaps in the Portfolio of Evidence were also identified.
Community Skills Development Project - New Age Solutions (Pty) Ltd (July 2021 – August 2021)
Working with New Age Engineering Solutions (Pty) Ltd, one of the prime contractors at the Astron Energy Cape Town Refinery, Emprotrain launched a Community Skills Development Project aimed at upskilling the youths of Du Noon.
New Age Solution funded 15 learners and Emprotrain facilitated the training at our Racing Park facilities, which is close to the targeted community of Du Noon.
Strategic Objectives of the Project was to equip entry level unemployed youth with Safety, Health and Environment, Power Tools and Piping knowledge as well as the necessary Skills that would enhance their chances of being employed by New Age on projects, maintenance and shutdowns at the Astron Energy Cape Town Refinery as Semi-Skilled Assistants.
This training was endorsed by the Du Noon Community Leadership Team and the councillor of Du Noon.
Empro Training has provided the following Training for the Chevron Cape Town and Engen Durban Oil Refinery Turnarounds:

Skills Evaluation and Skills Gap Analysis (March 2016 – July 2016)
Provided services to New Age Engineering Solutions (Pty) Ltd to assist them in developing their Western Cape base. The objective was to determine the level of skills of the artisans and to identify whether Refresher Training or Additional Training was required to up-skill the artisans to the level needed on either projects or turnarounds.
Eskom Koeberg Nuclear Power Station (October 2012 Outage, November 2013 Outage, March 2014 Outage, February 2015 Outage)
Provided Lesedi Nuclear Services with Empro Training Subject Matter Experts to facilitate Artisan Refresher training on Valve Maintenance and Flange Management – this was to raise quality awareness for the Outage at the Station. Worked closely with the Eskom Koeberg Station Training Department. Training was delivered at the Station’s training facilities in 2012 and 2013. The 2014 and 2015 Training was delivered at Empro Training Facilities in Racing Park.
Social Responsibility
In 2010, 2011, and 2012, the Emprotrain Directors co-funded the Community Skills Development Project with the CHIETA and Chevron, making a significant impact on the upliftment of skills in the local community around the Cape Town Refinery.
Notable Achievements
2006 to date
With the introduction of the Safe use of Power Tools – Angle Grinder Safety Training by Emprotrain in 2006 at the Cape Town Refinery, Chevron South Africa held the record of zero injuries when using an angle grinder when compared to other Chevron refineries in the world. This training is mandatory at the Cape Town Refinery.
2010
When compared to Health Environment and Safety (HES) Induction Training on a major Chevron Construction Project in Thailand, the training provided by Emprotrain for the 2010 Turnaround was considered a “Chevron Best Practice”.
2011
The Chevron USA Corporate Responsibility Program Management rated Emprotrain’s contribution to the Community Skills Development Program as World Class.
